2019 Seminars: Understanding development through 'Behavioural Change'

After School Programmes are highly underestimated and undervalued in terms of the developmental benefits they hold for child and youth participants as well as young adults employed in the sector.

More than just a place of safety, it is often a hub of activity defined by human connection. Whether it’s an academic tutoring programme, reading club, sports game or drama & dance class, young people participating in extended learning activities get to connect with each other. In such spaces they are given the opportunity to enjoy a participatory activity that is filled with fun, an opportunity to express themselves, to be acknowledged, and to acknowledge and help others while learning a new skill.

In addition, these young people connect with adult after school practitioners (tutors, coaches, etc.) who take the time to acknowledge, nurture and SEE them as young people developing into greater versions of themselves.

Yet, do we understand the real impact of this work on the behaviour of a young person? And how does our valuable work in the after school space contribute to constructive behavioural change for young people living in a destructive context as a result of social and economic brutality.

Our one day seminar in 2019 seeks to help our grantees explore the above-mentioned theme. We aim to start with a morning session that will be a basic introduction to the science of Behavioural Change and an afternoon session where they get to unpack how this knowledge applies to grantees’ work and how it could be used to better monitor, evaluate and articulate their value add in their programmes.

We will be having one seminar per province, as per details below…
